The New Nigeria

I know a land where dreams come true.
Where you can run to and find yourself, your true self

This land is not some mythical legends or one of Disney's fantasies
It is too real to be a façade
I don't just know about it, I live there

It's like a crucible with millions of particles
These particles are exciting individuals
Tribes and cultures, beliefs and ethnicity
Diversified religious beliefs
One of the best the world will ever have.

This land flows with milk and honey
Is situated in the West coast of Africa
Its exclusion from the continent will create a huge vacuum
It is a force to be reckoned with

How old will a child be before he/she can be left to try walking?
Getting independence was not just the making of history,
It was also a launching into higher grounds
The list of the possibilities were endless
As this new born nation takes itself from the cradle to stardom

A reality soon dawned on it
This is the challenge of who to preserve this precious land?
“Who will protect its heritage?”
Will it grow into something great or die off and forgotten?”

Many people have ravaged you, sweet land
Many a leader have exploited you even though they were from you
You've suffered many backstabbing from both traditional and religious rulers
The military regime had its toll on you mercilessly, with coup upon coup

Oh, what pain you must have felt
Being tossed to and fro by your very own
They were after your treasure not your overall progress
They taunted you day and night, seasons after seasons
Handling you over in turns to those more brutal than them

Little did they know that you are indestructible
An invincible nation with myriads of opportunities
Some come to you and they meet fortune
Others come and they left with no choice than to make you their new home

A lot has been said about your misfortunes
The corruption that erupted like magma from the human volcanoes called leaders
Some curse you like you were the reason for the predicaments
Yet some others bless you every chance they get

Nigeria, my fatherland,
The land of true patriots who despite all odd held your virtues at high esteem
They were despised because they did not join the wagon of people who exploit you
Those who dragged you down demoralizing pathways are now regretting it
As they age in pain even though they have accumulated so much from your hidden treasure
So much that they cannot seem to enjoy in the view of the ravaged masses
As such they bury it or some nasty unthinkable things

I know it may be hard to believe in you again
As some people have left you in search of a greener pastures
They go to strange land hoping to fine opportunities that they were not patient enough to explore in you

Soon they will return or worst still be ashamed to
But most definitely, they will hear of your good tidings
From distant land they will seek to return
By then your transformation will be known to all
The change you desire would have emanated

Oh, Nigeria, I see in you a conglomeration of good people, great nation

A country where citizen will pay its utility bill promptly, even if the company that supplies the services forgets to come to ask for the bill.

A country with alternative sources of power supply, where our children will never know what is called "UP NEPA" because it will be strange to be out of power supply for about half an hour

A country where it will be an aberration to see pot holes on our road and citizens will not have to choose what automobile to drive to where due to bad roads.

A country where individual business owners and other corporate establishments will not be hunted to pay tax but will gladly do as they see they commemorate effort of the government.

A nation where the citizens will find it demeaning to throw trash or garbage on the street.

A community where parents won't even consider street hawking as an option for their children, instead they would be diligent enough to get employments that will cater for their family ever before the child is born.

A nation whose city will be devoid of touts on the streets threatening the peace and tranquility of the society.

A nation where education will be held at high esteem as such the educational sector will be manned by individuals who are passionate about adding values to the Nigeria child as they work with policies that have been reviewed to favour such activities.

A country whose politics will be far from corruptions since the elected officials will be taken through series of services before they could secure their position.

A nation where civil war or its uprising will never be known.

A nation whose resources will be deployed for maximal profiting of the masses.

A nation whose citizen will prefer to patronize nationally made goods and services, having less to import but more to export as the quality of our goods and services would have skyrocketed.
This is the new Nigeria I see!

I believe in you, Nigeria.

I set my face like a flint
Not shifting focus from your values
I pledge to You, Nigeria, my country
To be faithful, loyal and honest
To serve you with all my strength
To defend your unity and uphold your honour and glory
So help me God.
